They are great for some fast sanding and I like to use them for my line based textures. It’s readily hammered and the steel is soft enough to file a design into. I’ve created patterns that simulate zippers, stitches, and weaving. To use it, place the punch perpendicular to the surface of the wood and strike it with a hammer. I purchased this carving last week, I think it is Cedar, it has a lot of damage. But I like a lot of its elements and hope to use it as a model.

Lets Talk About Woodcarving

These blades are great for sculpting or carving and in my case, texturing on medium to large pieces. I use two different wire brushes — a stiffer one and a finer one — to create the ridge lines. Start by soaking the board liberally with water; the wire brush cuts more quickly on wet wood. Scrub along the grain using the stiff brush until you erode away as much of the early wood as you like.

For protection against accidental cuts, many wood carvers wear safety gloves typically made from a Kevlar and steel weave on both hands. The v-shape trough is what separates the carving design from the un-worked portion of background wood. This simple setup for holding your bowl while carving is made from a plywood piece with threaded rods going through it, and a smaller board drilled for the rods, as shown above. The plywood extends below the circumference of the bowl so that it can be captured in a vise, securing it for carving.Holding a bowl during carving is always a challenge. These days I have a patternmaker’s vise at the end of my bench that is well-suited to the task. I cut a board to go against the rim of the bowl and interpose a piece of leather between them before tightening the vise. Previously, I used a right-angle plate built out of veneer-core plywood and held the bowl against it with a wood strip secured by threaded rod and wing nuts.

Just start slow and pretty soon you’ll realize the disc isn’t as intimidating as you first thought. I highly recommend practicing on some scrap before you dive into that heirloom table you want to carve. I know, most of you will probably skip past this section. But angle grinders spinning carbide bits at 20k RPM are no joke. The wood bits can come off in a hurry, so get those peepers protected. The idea is that gloves can get caught in a rotating machine and pull you into it.

In the second video, I carve an entire end table from a solid chunk of English Walnut. Although in that video I get some help from a chainsaw. Oil also imparts a sheen to the wood which, by reflecting light, helps the observer ‘read’ the form. Carvers seldom use gloss varnish as it creates too shiny a surface, which reflects so much light it can confuse the form; carvers refer to this as ‘the toffee apple effect’.

I couldn’t really do this with the original pattern as it was too big to wrap around without missing out on the border panel’s details. Niki is another incredible material artist with spectacularly detailed work that I really admire. The trim sheet was relatively quick to make after the original material was created.
